- Google launched the biggest Search redesign in 25 years, with Gemini 3.5 Flash as the new default in AI Mode.
- Personal Intelligence (Google's agentic Search layer) is now live in nearly 200 countries and 98 languages.
- Search agents now monitor blogs, news, social, finance, shopping, and sports in real time. They also book and call businesses on a user's behalf.
- If your business isn't agent-readable, you're invisible to a growing share of searches.
What Google announced
On May 19, 2026, Google rolled out what VP of Search Elizabeth Reid called the "biggest upgrade to our Search box in over 25 years, now completely reimagined with AI."
The headlines:
- Gemini 3.5 Flash is now the default for AI Mode globally.
- Personal Intelligence: users can connect Gmail, Google Photos, and soon Calendar. Search agents work continuously in the background.
- Multimodal inputs: text, images, files, videos, or Chrome tabs as a starting point for any query.
- Agentic booking expanded to local services and experiences, with Google now able to "call businesses on your behalf" for select categories.
- Custom generative UI: mini-apps, dashboards, and simulations rendered inside Search.
Google's framing is consumer-facing. The implications for businesses are bigger.
The shift hiding in plain sight
Google didn't just add features. It quietly moved Search from a query-response engine to an autonomous agent layer.
Three things changed at once:
1. The shopper isn't always human anymore.
Information agents now "continuously scan blogs, news sites and social posts" plus "real-time info on finance, shopping and sports." They surface what they find. Your customer may never see your website. But an agent reading on their behalf will.
2. The booking surface moved.
Agentic booking with "direct links to finish booking through the provider of your choice", plus outbound calls placed by Google to businesses, means the transaction now starts (and sometimes finishes) inside Search itself.
3. The default is "answered," not "browsed."
Custom generative UI (interactive tables, dashboards, mini-apps) means buyers get answers in-line. They don't click through to compare anymore. Whatever Google's agent decided about you is what they see.
What this means for your business
Three uncomfortable realities:
- If LLMs can't parse you, you don't exist. Schema, structured data, and unambiguous product or service information are no longer SEO niceties. They're the only way agents can include you in an answer.
- Your reviews and credentials need to live where agents can read them. Reviews buried in PDFs, case studies trapped in screenshots, certifications hidden behind login walls. All invisible to the LLMs deciding who to recommend.
- Your booking and contact flow needs to handle a non-human customer. Google is now calling businesses on behalf of users. If your phone tree, intake form, or booking system isn't built for that, you're losing deals you'll never see.
This is what "AI visibility" means in practice. Not just whether ChatGPT mentions you. Whether the entire AI-mediated commerce layer (now including Google) recognizes your business as a valid answer.
What to do this quarter
Three moves that compound:
- Audit what AI says about your category today. Run your top 5–10 buyer queries through ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Note who gets cited. Note who doesn't. Often, you.
- Make your business agent-readable. Schema, structured data, clear FAQs answering the questions buyers actually ask, verifiable reviews and credentials in machine-readable format.
- Build for an agent-as-buyer flow. Reduce friction on inbound calls and forms. Assume the "customer" on the other end is an AI placing the booking. Make sure your handoff doesn't break.
Google's update is the loudest signal yet that agentic commerce has moved from "near future" to "now."
Businesses that wait will pay the same price as those who waited on mobile in 2010 or SEO in 2003: invisibility to the buyers they could have served.
