- Parse, an AI visibility tracker, analyzed 130 answers from ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode about lab-grown diamond retailers, from July 5 to October 19, 2026.
- Brilliant Earth appeared in 74% of answers, Blue Nile in 61%, Clean Origin in 53% and Ritani in 49%.
- Two grading labs, GIA and IGI, appeared in 42% and 38% of answers. AI leans on certification to decide who to trust.
- The two assistants do not always agree: Ritani appears in 28% of ChatGPT answers and 71% of Google AI Mode answers.
- The Knot reports lab-grown stones in 61% of engagement rings bought by couples married in 2025, up from 46% for 2023.
The names AI keeps repeating
Parse tracks how AI assistants answer shopping questions. For lab-grown diamond retailers, it collected 130 answers from ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode between July 5 and October 19, 2026, and counted which brands each one mentioned.
- 1. Brilliant Earth, in 74% of answers.
- 2. Blue Nile, in 61%.
- 3. Clean Origin, in 53%.
- 4. Ritani, in 49%.
- 5. James Allen, in 39%, followed by VRAI (35%), Rare Carat (33%) and Shane Co. (27%).
Every one of them is a national brand that sells online. Not one independent jeweler made the top ten. Two of the most mentioned names are not retailers at all: the grading labs GIA, in 42% of answers, and IGI, in 38%.
More than half of engagement rings are now lab-grown. When a couple asks AI where to buy one, the answer is almost always the same handful of websites.
Why this matters now
Lab-grown is no longer a niche. According to The Knot's Real Weddings Study 2026, lab-grown center stones were in 61% of engagement rings bought by couples who married in 2025. Two years earlier the figure was 46%. The fastest-growing part of the bridal market is also the part where AI has settled on a short list.
For an independent jeweler, that is a real problem. A lab-grown stone is easier to compare than a natural one, so the store, the service and the trust around it become the reason to buy. If AI never mentions your store, the shopper never gets to find that out.
Three things the data shows
1. AI uses certification as a shortcut for trust.
GIA and IGI appear in roughly four of every ten answers. When the assistants explain who to buy from, they lean on grading reports. A jeweler that shows the grading lab and report number on every stone gives AI the same signal it is already looking for.
2. ChatGPT and Google do not see the market the same way.
Ritani appears in 71% of Google AI Mode answers and only 28% of ChatGPT Search answers. Rare Carat swings the other way. Being visible on one assistant says little about the other, so any check of your own position needs both.
3. National questions favor national brands.
These answers come from general questions about where to buy. A couple in Coral Gables or Brooklyn often asks something more local. Local answers draw on different sources, and that is where an independent jeweler has a fair chance to be named.
What an independent jeweler can do
- Put the certificate on the page. Lab, report number, cut, color, clarity and carat for every stone, as text AI can read, not only inside an image.
- Say clearly that you sell lab-grown. Many independent stores carry lab-grown stones but describe themselves only as fine jewelers. If the words "lab-grown" are not on your site, AI has no reason to connect you to the question.
- Ask the local questions yourself. "Where should I buy a lab-grown engagement ring in my city?" on ChatGPT and on Google AI Mode. Note who is named and which sites the answers cite. Those sites are where you need to be listed and reviewed.
The limits of this data
130 answers is a small sample, and Parse sells AI visibility tracking, so it has an interest in the topic. The exact percentages will move. But the pattern of a short national list, with certification labs used as trust signals, is consistent across both assistants.
We are now checking independent jewelers in New York and South Florida with the same local questions their customers ask, and will publish what we find.
Does AI name your jewelry?
Tell us your brand or your store. We will show you what ChatGPT and Claude say when a shopper asks where to buy what you sell, and who they name instead of you.
